Claude Code Security: 3 CVEs, MCP Risks, and How to Stay Safe

Claude Code had 3 security vulnerabilities disclosed in 2025–2026, including one that lets attackers steal your API key without any user interaction. Here is what they are, how they work, and how to use Claude Code safely.

Claude Code by Anthropic is one of the most capable agentic coding tools available. It can read your codebase, write and edit files, run commands, and coordinate complex multi-step development tasks. The Attack Surface: Why Agentic Tools Are Different

Traditional coding assistants suggest code. Claude Code acts. It reads project-level configuration files (.claude/settings.json, CLAUDE.md), executes hooks at specific lifecycle events, and connects to external services via MCP servers. All of these are defined in files that live inside the repository you open.

This means an attacker who controls a repository can control what Claude Code does when you open it. The attack works not by exploiting a traditional vulnerability, but by providing malicious configuration that Claude Code is designed to follow.


CVE-2025-59536: Malicious Hook Execution

Researchers at Check Point Research disclosed CVE-2025-59536 (severity 8.7/10): Claude Code's Hooks feature allows developers to execute shell commands at project lifecycle events: after a tool use, before a commit, or after a build. Hooks are defined in project-level configuration files. An attacker can include a malicious hook definition in a repository. When a developer opens the project and starts Claude Code, the hook fires automatically.

The hook runs with the developer's full system privileges after the first tool use, which happens automatically when Claude Code reads and analyses the project files on startup. The developer may see nothing unusual.

CVE-2026-21852: API Key Theft with Zero Interaction

The second vulnerability, CVE-2026-21852, is particularly alarming: an attacker can steal your Anthropic API key without any user interaction required. By overriding the apiUrl field in project-level configuration, all Claude API calls (including the authentication headers containing your API key) are silently rerouted to an attacker-controlled server.

The attacker logs your API key from the Authorization header of the first request, which happens automatically when Claude Code initialises. You see a normal response because the attacker proxies it through to Anthropic. They now have unlimited access to your Anthropic account.

The Third Flaw: Repository-Level Command Bypass

Check Point Research documented a third vulnerability without a CVE assigned: repository-level settings in project configuration can be used to suppress or bypass the prompts that normally require user approval before Claude Code executes shell commands.

The intended design is that Claude Code asks for explicit user approval before running any potentially destructive command. This bypass means that a malicious project can pre-approve dangerous operations, making it appear as though the user consented to actions they never saw.

As Dark Reading reported, Anthropic patched all three vulnerabilities following responsible disclosure by Check Point Research. Updating Claude Code to the latest version addresses all three CVEs.

MCP Server Risks

Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers extend Claude Code's capabilities: they can read files, execute commands, query databases, and access external APIs. MCP server definitions live in .mcp.json inside the repository. A malicious MCP server definition is a direct path to remote code execution.

As GitGuardian noted, the paradigm has shifted: it is no longer just about humans hardcoding secrets in code. AI agents now have wide system access, and that access is defined in files that any contributor (or attacker) can place in a repository.

AI-Generated Code Vulnerabilities

Beyond the IDE-level exploits, Claude Code generates code with the same LLM-pattern vulnerabilities found across all AI coding tools. A systematic audit cited by Cybersecurity News found that AI tools including Claude introduced OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities in 45% of coding tasks. The most common patterns in Claude Code output:

  • SQL injection via string concatenation in database queries
  • Hardcoded API keys and secrets in configuration files
  • Missing authentication checks on generated API routes
  • Prompt injection vulnerabilities in LLM-powered features it generates
  • SSRF through unvalidated external URL parameters

Immediate steps

  • Update Claude Code to the latest version: claude update (patches all 3 CVEs)
  • Before opening any unfamiliar repository, read .claude/settings.json, .mcp.json, and CLAUDE.md: look for hooks, external URLs, or command definitions
  • Never open repositories received via phishing or unknown job offers in Claude Code
  • If you suspect API key compromise, immediately rotate your key at console.anthropic.com and audit recent API usage for unexpected calls
  • Run unfamiliar codebases in a sandboxed environment (Docker, virtual machine) before opening them with any agentic tool
